Create a Business Plan for Your Pet Business

Create a Business Plan for Your Pet Business

The 7 Important Sections

The idea of creating a business plan can sound daunting, but it’s a pivotal step in launching your business and the growth that will follow.

Here is a summary of the 7 sections you should be sure to include (and what should be included in each section) when creating your business plan.

Your business plan should include the following:

  1. Executive Summary
  2. Company Description
  3. Products and Services
  4. Market Analysis
  5. Strategy and Implementation
  6. Management Team
  7. Financial Analysis

1. Executive Summary

This section should be short and concise. Being around one page in length, this section should convey a brief overview of your business. It should include:

    • Your business name
    • Mission statement
    • Products and services you are providing
    • Specific purpose of the plan (securing investors, setting strategies, etc.)

2. Company Description

This section should convey who you are, how you will operate and what your goals are within your business.

    • Business location
    • Legal structure of your business (corporation, sole proprietorship, etc.)
    • A brief history of your business
    • Who will manage the business and their credentials
    • Products and services you will provide
    • The market you’re serving
    • Financial and market highlights
    • A summary of your short term and long term goals

3. Products and Services

Articulate what you’re selling, focusing on the customer benefits.

Include details on your suppliers, how much your products and services cost, estimated net revenue expected for sales. Pictures and diagrams are great visuals to include in this section.

This section should include:

    • Detailed description of your products/services (emphasize customer benefits)
    • Advantages you have over competitors
    • Relevant copyright and patient data (if applicable)

A competitive advantage your business offers can sound something like “Unlike other businesses in the area, we plan on installing cameras so that our pet owners can view their pets while away” or “we plan on doing a VIP drop-off and pick-up option for our pet owners.”

4. Market Analysis

This section you want to be able to display your knowledge of your customers and the pet industry.

This section should include:

    • Demographics
    • Target market
    • Market need
    • Competitors
    • Barriers to entry
    • Customer personas

5. Strategy and Implementation

Summarize how you plan on growing your business and your strategy that you plan to implement.

This section should include:

6. Management Team

Outline your company’s organization structure. Who are the owners? Management team? Board of directors?

Include the following:

    • Staff names and positions
    • Qualifications
    • Resumes
    • List of any advisors, board members, attorneys, accountants, etc.

7. Financial Analysis

This section is best to develop with an accountant if possible. Complete this section once you’ve completed a market analysis and have already set goals for your company.

Estimate the costs of operating your business and how much funding you’ll need to start. Talking to other pet business owners is a great resource for more accurate numbers. They can help with expenses you may have missed as well as starting your operation and those first steps.
